What Is a Free Orthodontic Consultation?
A free orthodontic consultation is a no-cost first visit to evaluate your teeth, bite, and jaw and review your treatment options. What actually happens at a free orthodontic consultation is straightforward: an exam, digital images, and a clear recommendation. You leave informed, with no fee and no obligation to start.
Most first visits include four things:
- A hands-on exam of your teeth, gums, jaw, and bite
- Digital photos, an X-ray, and a 3D scan of your smile
- A recommendation with options and an estimated timeline
Free means free. There’s no charge for the visit, no deposit required, and nothing billed to your insurance for the exam itself. If you decide the timing isn’t right, that’s fine. You keep the information either way.
This visit works for teens, kids & kids at heart. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7, when enough permanent teeth have come in to spot developing bite and spacing concerns early.

What Happens During the Appointment?
Your first visit runs about 30 to 60 minutes and follows six steps: check-in and history review, an oral exam, digital imaging, a walkthrough of what Dr. Katie Snapp found, treatment options, and next steps. Every free orthodontic consultation follows the same clear path, so nothing about your first visit catches you off guard. You’ll know your options before you leave.
1. Check-in and health history. You’ll fill out or confirm a short form covering medical history, dental history, and any concerns you’ve noticed. Bring your insurance card and a list of questions. Parents, tell us about thumb-sucking habits, mouth breathing, or a family history of crowded teeth.
2. Clinical exam. Dr. Katie looks at your teeth, gums, jaw joints, and how your upper and lower teeth fit together. She’ll check for crowding, gaps, and bite issues like overbite, underbite, or crossbite. This part is quick and comfortable.
3. Digital imaging. Expect a panoramic X-ray, clinical photos, and a 3D digital scan. No goopy impression trays. The scan takes a few minutes and creates a precise model of your teeth that we use for planning and, when applicable, for building Invisalign trays.
4. Your smile assessment. Now the images go up on the screen. Dr. Katie walks you through exactly what she sees, in plain language, including anything happening below the gumline, like roots that are still coming in or sitting too close together. You’ll see your own teeth, not a stock diagram.
5. Treatment recommendation. Based on the findings, Dr. Katie explains which options fit your case:
- Metal braces, still the most common choice for teens, kids & kids at heart
- Clear braces, less noticeable on your teeth, with the chance to pick your finish
- Invisalign, a series of custom trays you can take out whenever you want
- Monitoring, if growth needs more time before treatment starts
6. Next steps. If you’re ready, we can often schedule your start appointment before you walk out. If you’d rather think it over, that’s fine too, take some time and reach back out whenever you’re ready.
Why Is an Orthodontic Consultation Worth It?
An hour now saves guesswork later. Social media quizzes and mail-order aligner questionnaires can’t examine your bite, and they can’t see roots or developing teeth on an X-ray.
Here’s what you actually gain:
- A real diagnosis. Dr. Katie Snapp is a board-certified orthodontist whose specialty path includes four years of college, four years of dental school, and a three-year orthodontics residency, roughly 11 years of training in total. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, only a small share of dental school graduates go on to complete an orthodontic residency, a figure commonly cited as about six out of every 100. [STAT_NEEDED: verify the 11-year training timeline and the six-of-100 orthodontist figure against a current AAO source before publishing]
- Clarity on timing. Sometimes the right answer is “let’s watch this for a year.” You’ll hear that honestly.
- A preview of results. Digital scans allow treatment simulations, so you can see the direction your smile is headed before committing.
- Side-by-side options. Compare braces and Invisalign, plus estimated treatment length, in one sitting.
You deserve a bold, beautiful smile, and you deserve to understand exactly how you’ll get there.
Free Consultation vs. Paid Exam vs. Virtual Screening
Not every “smile check” gives you the same information. Here’s how the three common options compare, and where the free consult at Smile Ranch Orthodontics fits in.
| Free in-office consult | Paid dental exam | Virtual/photo screening | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imaging included | Panoramic X-ray, photos, 3D scan | Bitewing X-rays, sometimes panoramic | Photos only |
| Exam depth | Full orthodontic evaluation of teeth, bite, and jaw growth | General dental health focus | Surface-level look at tooth position |
| Who reviews it | Board-certified orthodontist | General dentist | Varies by platform |
| Diagnostic accuracy | Highest | Good for dental health, limited for bite planning | Limited |
X-rays are the difference-maker. A great deal of what matters in orthodontics sits under the gums where no camera can reach: root angles, unerupted teeth, extra or missing teeth, and jaw joint position. A photo can show crowding. Only imaging can show why the crowding is happening and what will move safely.
Virtual screenings still have a place. They’re a convenient starting point if you’re curious. Just plan on an in-person exam before any treatment decision.
Who Should Book a Consultation?
Some people know they need braces. Others have no idea a small bite issue is quietly wearing down their teeth. Both should come in.
Good candidates for a free consult include:
- Children around age 7. Early evaluation catches crossbites, crowding, and jaw growth concerns while there’s still room to guide them.
- Teens. Once most adult teeth have come in, crowding, spacing, and bite issues are ready to address. Invisalign for teens helps you focus on doing what you do best, being a teen.
- Adults. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, adults make up roughly one in every five orthodontic patients today. [STAT_NEEDED: confirm the current AAO figure for adult orthodontic patients before publishing] Many want Invisalign or clear braces for a discreet look, including people whose teeth shifted years after previous treatment.
- Anyone with symptoms. Jaw discomfort, clicking, trouble chewing, chronic mouth breathing, or visible wear on the edges of your teeth all deserve a look.
- Anyone referred by a dentist. If your dentist mentioned an orthodontic referral, that’s your cue.
As a mom of three little girls herself, Dr. Katie knows families are busy and wants your visit to be efficient and clear.
A free consult is simply information, offered with zero pressure. You’ll meet Dr. Katie, see your own smile on screen, and understand your choices before deciding anything. Smile Ranch Orthodontics welcomes teens, kids & kids at heart, and we’d love to show you what’s possible. Whenever the timing feels right, we’re here to care for your smile, and you can learn more about your options at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an orthodontic consultation take?
Plan on 30 to 60 minutes. That covers check-in, the exam, digital imaging, and your treatment discussion. First visits for children sometimes run shorter, especially when the recommendation is simply to monitor growth.
Are orthodontic consultations really free, or are there hidden fees?
Truly free. At Smile Ranch Orthodontics, there’s no charge for the exam, the X-ray, the scan, or the treatment plan discussion, and we don’t bill your insurance for the visit. Fees only begin if you choose to start treatment, and you’ll see them in writing first.
Do I need a dentist referral to book?
No. You can schedule directly, no referral required. That said, we love working alongside your general dentist and are happy to share findings with them so everyone stays on the same page.
Will I get X-rays at the first visit?
Usually, yes. A panoramic X-ray shows root position, unerupted teeth, and jaw structure, which is information no photo can provide. If you’ve had recent X-rays taken elsewhere, bring them or ask your dentist to send them over so we may not need to repeat them.
Can treatment start the same day?
Sometimes. Straightforward cases can occasionally begin the same day if you’re ready and time allows. More often, we’ll set your start appointment for a follow-up visit so your appliance or Invisalign trays can be prepared specifically for you.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Bring your insurance card, photo ID, any recent dental records or X-rays, and a list of questions. Write the questions down ahead of time. It’s easy to forget them once you’re in the chair, and there are no questions we’d rather skip.
